In the second part of our conversation with Billy, the 30 year old second generation farmer, the focus shifts from the biology of the shrimp to the legacy of the industry. For Billy, running a modern farm in Indonesia is about more than just the current harvest. it is about ensuring the ocean remains healthy for the next generation. "Everything is interconnected," Billy says. "The uncertainty is the hardest part. We cannot control the market price or the feed factory, so we must be masters of what happens within our own gates."

Sustainability Through Proper Management

One of the most common concerns in aquaculture is the impact on the sea. Billy addresses this head on by investing in rigorous wastewater management. At his facility, the Environmental Control Agency conducts monthly tests to ensure the water is clean before it ever returns to the ocean.

"I encourage all fellow farmers to invest in proper wastewater management," Billy explains. "It protects the environment and keeps neighboring farms running smoothly. When we take care of the water, everyone can harvest." This commitment to clean discharge ensures that the shrimp sold in stores like Target and Kroger is produced with respect for the coastal ecosystem.

Building a Team from the Ground Up

While many industries hunt for years of experience, Billy takes a different approach. He prefers to hire people who are eager to learn and have no prior experience in the field. This allows him to train his staff in his specific, tech forward methods without the hurdle of fixed mindsets.

His farms utilize updated systems like advanced blowers and paddle wheels, which require a fresh perspective to manage effectively. "Most of our staff start from zero," Billy says. "We train them from the ground up and offer real career growth." A worker who starts as a feeder can rise to become a technician or a mechanic, creating a culture of loyalty and expertise. When the harvest is successful, a fair profit sharing system ensures that every member of the team feels the reward of their hard work.

A Message of Responsibility

As a second generation farmer, Billy is deeply concerned with the long term health of the Indonesian shrimp industry. He advocates for a "wise" approach to farming that avoids banned substances and prioritizes sustainability.

"Our goal should be to pass this down to future generations," he says. "We want to continue the legacy." By combining modern technology with a deep sense of environmental duty, Billy is proving that the future of Indonesian shrimp is in good hands.
