The Wild Harvest of Tarakan: Antonius and the Art of Natural Shrimp Farming

Farmer Stories
November 10, 2025
In the remote, mangrove rich waters of Tarakan, Antonius is practicing a form of aquaculture that feels more like a partnership with nature than a modern industry. At 51 years old, Antonius manages a vast 200 hectare territory divided into 21 massive plots. Unlike high density industrial farms, his approach is rooted in an "extensive" system where the environment does 90 percent of the work. "God has already provided what is needed," Antonius says. "The water, the palms, the land: everything here supports this way of farming. It makes things easier."

The "No Feed" Secret to Quality

What makes the shrimp from Antonius’s farm unique is what they don't eat. In his extensive system, he provides zero additional feed or chemicals. Instead, the Tiger Shrimp thrive on the natural nutrients found within the ecosystem.

His process begins by clearing an area and letting it dry in the sun for a week before filling it with water and introducing the young shrimp. This results in a product that is as close to wild caught as possible: lean, healthy, and completely natural. The prize of his harvest is the Black Tiger Shrimp, which typically reach an impressive average size of 26 (head on).

Mangroves: The Natural Nursery

A key component of Antonius’s success is his commitment to the local flora. Half of his farm is dedicated to mangrove conservation. These trees are not just for show; they are functional lungs for the farm, providing essential oxygen and creating a protective canopy.

"Small shrimp like to hide among the wood, the mangroves, and the palms," Antonius explains. By preserving these natural shelters, he creates a safe haven for the shrimp to grow alongside milkfish and crabs, mimicking the biodiversity of the open sea.

Discipline at the Gate

While nature provides the resources, Antonius provides the discipline. One of his "pro tips" for maintaining a healthy harvest is a simple but effective mechanical filter placed at the water gate. This prevents predators like wild fish from entering the ponds and competing with his stock.

And while there are stories of more frightening visitors in the surrounding areas like crocodiles, Antonius stays focused on his routine. For him, the shrimp are a blessing that brings fortune to his family, provided he remains a consistent and disciplined student of the land.

When you enjoy shrimp from our extensive farms, you are eating a product grown without a single artificial additive. It is the taste of Tarakan: pure, green, and large, just as nature intended.
